What Changed in Local Search
Google's local ranking algorithm has always weighted three things: relevance, distance, and prominence. In 2024 and 2025, the weighting shifted. Distance matters less than it used to. Prominence — driven by reviews, structured data, and content depth — matters more. For Central Valley service businesses, this is actually good news: you can outrank larger national players if your local signals are stronger.
Here are the five factors producing the most consistent ranking gains for our clients right now.
1. Review Velocity and Recency
The number of Google reviews you have is less important than how recently you're getting them. A business with 40 reviews all from 2022 will underperform one with 25 reviews spread across the last six months. Build a simple post-job text or email sequence asking for a review — response rates are 3-5x higher than asking in person.
2. Service-Specific Landing Pages
A single 'Services' page listing everything you offer is nearly invisible in local search. Google needs a dedicated page for each service in each area. 'Window washing Fresno' and 'solar panel cleaning Clovis' should be separate pages with distinct content, not the same page with two mentions.
For one client's window washing site, splitting one generic services page into seven service-specific pages produced a 40% increase in organic sessions within 90 days.
3. LocalBusiness Schema Markup
Structured data tells Google's crawlers exactly what your business is, where it operates, and what it offers. A properly implemented LocalBusiness schema with areaServed, hasOfferCatalog, and openingHoursSpecification fields gives you a consistent advantage in the local pack — especially for voice and AI-summary results.
4. GBP Post Frequency
Your Google Business Profile is a ranking signal, not just a listing. Businesses that post weekly updates — seasonal offers, completed job photos, FAQs — see measurably higher local pack visibility than those that set it and forget it. Photos of actual jobs in Fresno-area locations carry more weight than stock images.
5. Core Web Vitals on Mobile
Google's mobile-first indexing means your PageSpeed score on a phone matters more than on desktop. LCP under 2.5 seconds and no layout shift are the thresholds that affect rankings. Most local service websites fail both. A Next.js or static site rebuild typically resolves this in one pass.
What Doesn't Move the Needle Anymore
Domain age, keyword density in meta descriptions, and reciprocal link exchanges from local directories are largely noise in 2026. Don't let an agency bill you for these.
